Archbishop Hannan High School felt even more like home on January 13th as the school celebrated Grandparents’ Mass. Students invited their grandparents to join them for mass, an important component of school life at Archbishop Hannan. Students with grandparents present sat in a designated area of the gym with their grandparents. Father Charles, who celebrated the mass, began his homily by asking students what they love most about their grandparents. Students responded by expressing gratitude for their grandparents’ love and encouragement. Referring to grandparents as “a reflection of God’s love and compassion,” Father Charles explained four key characteristics that make grandparents special. They encourage grandchildren to be unique, they are a source of validation and unconditional love, they serve as a link to the past and a key to the future, and they remind their grandchildren that mistakes make us human. Students and grandparents enjoyed this touching homily about the special bond that grandchildren and grandparents share. Campus Minister Leila Benoit, who coordinated this Grandparents’ Mass, explained, “This is a Hannan tradition that we decided to bring back this year. We were honored to have so many grandparents come and share this special day.” The mass was a memorable experience that allowed the Hannan family to grow even stronger.

A Very Special Moment
As part of the mass, Father Charles announced that January 13th was a momentous day for one particular set of grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Daly. The Daly’s, grandparents of Hannan student Catherine Lange, celebrated their 50th anniversary with a renewal of vows as a testament of love and fidelity. Lange expressed, “To me, Grandparents’ Day was really cool. Seeing my grandparents renew their vows on the day of their 50th wedding anniversary was just so amazing and I’m very happy to be able to witness something that important.” The mass concluded with a blessing of grandparents and the singing of the Hannan Alma Mater. Students were then invited to take their grandparents on tours of the school and reconvene in the gym, where a lunch reception was held. Students enjoyed the opportunity to share lunch with their grandparents and to get to know their classmates’ grandparents as well.

Thirteen members of the Archbishop Hannan Student Council, accompanied by Student Council Moderators Charles Baird and Mignon Poche, recently traveled to the Louisiana Association of Student Councils (LASC) Convention at East Jefferson High School. This three day event was held to elect officers for district and state positions for the 2012 LASC. At the LASC Convention, the students attended workshops, met students from 106 other Student Councils throughout the state, and listened to multiple motivational speakers. Senior Lauren Voelker expressed, “It’s inspiring to see the work that we do be recognized as well as witness the success of other Student Councils.”

Our Student Council came home with many accolades of which they are very proud. Junior Rebecca Sigler was elected District II President, which spans St. Tammany, St. Helena, Washington, and Tangipahoa Parishes. Archbishop Hannan’s Student Council was awarded “Gold Honor Council,” a recognition of service, involvement, and overall success of a school’s Student Council. Our school was also in the “Thousand Dollar Club,” which acknowledges schools that have donated over a thousand dollars to the LASC annual state charity. This year’s state charity is HOPE, a no-kill animal shelter. Senior, Cameron Dupuy, won the LASC Film Contest, a challenge for students to make a short video based on the theme “Destination Leadership.” The task was to find a creative way to express leadership, and Cameron chose to make a parody of the movie Inception through his film “Leadception.” The entire Hannan community is extremely proud of our Student Council for all of their dedication and their success not only at the LASC Convention but also in the various activities they coordinate throughout the school year.
