Hannan Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony

On Monday, May 14th, excitement filled the air as Archbishop Hannan High School officially broke ground on their new expansion project which includes a 10 classroom building, a library, and a football/soccer field.

Special guests Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond and Dr. Jan Lancaster, along with Principal Charles Latour, O.P., led the ceremony to bless the project as family, friends, and students of Archbishop Hannan High School witnessed the celebration of growth.

Other participants in the groundbreaking ceremony included Very Reverend Rodney Bourg, West St. Tammany Dean; Fr. Chris Eggleton, O.P., Provincial of the Southern Dominican Province; Mr. Kyle Kent, Kent Construction; Mr. Kenneth Sprague, Fauntleroy and Latham; Ms. Pat Brister, St. Tammany Parish President; Mr. Mike Cooper, Mayor of Covington, and Mr. Scott Manguno, the alumni representative.

Mr. Thomas Huck Selected as Teacher of the Year

Each school year, Archbishop Hannan High School bestows the honor of Teacher of the Year to one esteemed teacher. This award, voted on by the faculty, recognizes one teacher who possesses a strong rapport with the students, maintains a commitment to academic excellence, and goes above and beyond the expectations in the classroom. The 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year recipient is Mr. Thomas Huck.

Mr. Huck is in his second year of teaching at Archbishop Hannan High School, and his current classes include 9^th, 10^th, and 12^th grade Theology. He explains that he strives “primarily to equip students with the necessary skills so that they may learn how to personally grow in their relationship with God and community.” Topics covered in his courses include Theology of the Body and Church History, New Testament and Sacraments, and Old Testament and Salvation History.

Describing her experience in Mr. Huck’s class, senior Katie Kranz said, “Mr. Huck’s class constantly makes me strive to be a better person. He is very caring for his students and loves what he does.” Sophomore Morgan Manfre added, “What makes Mr. Huck such a great teacher is how he believes so strongly in what he teaches and he is able to teach us in ways that we as students can understand.”

Mr. Huck’s dedication to Hannan is present in more than just his classroom teaching. He currently coaches the boys’ soccer team as well as the tennis team. He is also chair of the Theology Department and the sophomore class co-moderator.

He has a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education Social Studies. Prior to earning a Master of Arts in Theology and Christian Ministry degree from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Huck taught in Picayune for three and a half years.

The Teacher of the Year award was announced during the April faculty meeting. Father Charles presented Mr. Huck with a plaque to recognize his accomplishment. Congratulations to Mr. Huck for this honor!

Congratulations Lady Hawks – 1A State Softball Champions!

The Lady Hawks have captured the 1A state softball title for the second year in a row. The Lady Hawks entered the playoffs as the number 3 seed after finishing the season with a 19-7 record. Playing at home, the Lady Hawks defeated Ridgewood 15-0 in the bi-district round. For the regional round, the Lady Hawks then traveled to LaSalle, where they came away with an 8-2 victory. Going on the road to Sulphur for the state tournament, the team won the quarterfinal round versus Westminister Christian 6-1. Coming even closer to their goal of defending their state championship title from the previous year, the Lady Hawks defeated Ouachita Christian in the semi-finals by a score of 5-1. The Lady Hawks were able to finally accomplish their goal with an incredible 10-2 victory over Catholic, Pointe Coupee in the finals. The Lady Hawks closed out their remarkable season with a 24-7 record.

It is an incredible task to win a state championship once, but to win state two years in a row demands a strong work ethic and desire to succeed. “Typically there is a letdown the season after any team wins a championship, but these kids did their due diligence and stayed hungry for an opportunity to repeat and successfully accomplished their goal. I am extremely proud of them,” expressed Coach Becky Lambert, who is currently in her 6^th year of coaching the Lady Hawks.

The Lady Hawks have three seniors on the team- Meagan Finch, Dallas Hebert, and Victoria St. Philip. Hebert was named the tournament’s MVP and exemplified outstanding offensive performance. St. Philip had the honor of catching the last out for the last game of her high school career. “It was the only fly ball that came to me the whole weekend in Sulphur, and it was a great feeling to catch my last fly ball to win state again. I’ve been playing with the same girls for years. They’ll always be a part of my family. We will always be the back to back team,” said St. Philip. The leadership of all three seniors will truly be missed next year.

The softball team’s “Super Fan,” Mrs. Sherie Gioe, who traveled to Sulphur to watch the girls play, stated, “The girls did an outstanding job; hard work and good coaching paid off. One state championship is hard enough to come by- but to go back to back is just incredible. I’m so proud of everyone involved.”

The girls and coaches will be presented with their championship rings at the beginning of next school year. Congratulations to the girls and Coach Becky Lambert for all of your hard work and accomplishments!

Senior Doug Hartigan Receives Allstate Sugar Bowl Scholar-Athlete Award

Hannan senior Doug Hartigan recently received the prestigious Allstate Sugar Bowl and National Football Foundation 2012 Scholar-Athlete Award. At a luncheon held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on April 11, Hartigan, a four year member of the Hawks football team, was one of 34 football players recognized for success not only on the field but also in the classroom. Archie Manning delivered an inspiring speech and presented a plaque to each of the student-athletes honored. Hartigan served as co-captain of the Hawks football team this year and was named 1^st team all-district as well as District 6-1A center. His junior year, Hartigan received an award for Outstanding Offensive Performance and also earned all-district honorable mention. His academic accomplishments include serving as a member of the National Honor Society and being a 3.5 honor roll recipient. Hartigan expressed, “The award to me was a great honor. It was exciting to see the four years of hard work finally pay off. Being put on the same level with outstanding football players all over the state made me proud of what I had done.” He was nominated for this award by Coach Pat Lambert. Congratulations Doug on this wonderful honor!
